U.N. Development Fund for Women Executive Director Noeleen Heyzer met yesterday with President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and urged him to involve women in the war-torn country's political transition and economic reconstruction.
Meeting with the president for an hour in Kinshasa, the D.R.C. capital, Heyzer said D.R.C. women have told her during her current three-day visit to the country that they expect to play a major part in rebuilding communities and the country as a whole.
None of four D.R.C. vice presidents that rebel and opposition groups have named to serve during the transition is a woman (Integrated Regional Information Networks, May 21).
